Malaysian Red Cross memories – 1969

When the May Thirteenth 1969 incident broke out a state of emergency was declared. I called Datuk (now Tun) Arshad Ayub then Director of MARA Institute of Technology to report I was okay and that I woud like to serve in the Red Cross, and he gave permission. So I spent one month mostly at its HQ in Jalan Belfield KL and then became life member as shown below. My car souped up Mini 1000 No. BU2021 flew a Red Cross Flag and I had a curfew pass. Tapioca Thosai (Dosa) and Wartime stories

The tapioca dish I had with lunch today (home-grown tapioca supplied by a neighbour and cooked by Suguna, my wife) reminded me that it was the staple diet for many of us during World War Two. When the war came to the Malay Peninsula I was just one year old but my mother had told me stories about how we survived on home-grown vegetables including tapioca.
